There’s a common belief that only long distance, or cardiovascular endurance type of exercises are good for weight loss. While you do lose weight while doing those exercises, they don’t increase your metabolism very much, because they don’t build much muscle mass. By doing some strength training, you will increase your muscle tone, and this will increase your metabolism. This can dramatically help you lose weight.

Hindu squats are a great way to strengthen your upper legs, calves, stomach, and lower back. Stand with your feet about shoulder width apart. Take a deep breath in. Pull you arms back behind you, and begin to swing them forward as you squat down. Put the weight on the balls of your feet. Swing your arms so they tips of your fingers barely touch the floor. Inhale as you stand up. Repeat as many times as you can. At first, you’ll be able to do ten or twenty, but you’ll be able to increase over time.

The Hindu push up is another great exercise that works pretty much every muscle above the waist. Start in the regular push up position. Raise your back side as high as you can. You should look like an upside down V. Push backward as far as you can, and lower your face just above the floor. Sweep your face and chest forward, and then raise your head up, so it’s at the highest point. Then move back into the upside down V and repeat. If you haven’t done push ups in a while, don’t expect to do more than a couple. But after a few weeks you’ll notice some dramatic changes to your upper body.

The third is any kind of sit up. There endless variations, so find whichever works for you. Crunches, reverse crunches, leg lifts, all these are great. If you have one of those inflatable exercise balls, you can lie on it on your back, and do some sit ups that way. This will give you incredible abdominal strength.

If you do these three exercises on a daily basis, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you burn off some extra body fat. Even if you can only do one of each, stick with them, as they’ll get easier. When you can do plenty of each, you know you are in fantastic shape.
